About:

As a culminating activity for disability awareness month, the Elwood Special Education Parent-Teacher Association (SEPTA) sponsored a wheelchair basketball game, featuring a team of 14 Elwood students and faculty against the National Wheelchair Basketball Association Nassau County Kings men’s team on April 30.

To kick off the event, members of the Elwood-John H. Glenn High School American Sign Language class signed the National Anthem sung by an aspiring music group from New York City called “D’Votion.” Before the game began, Elwood SEPTA President Terri Zenobio introduced each of the Elwood students and faculty members who made up the Elwood Knight Riders team coached by Elwood Middle School student Meghan Chiodo.

Following the same rules and regulations as the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the game consisted of two twenty-minute halves. Members of the community cheered as both teams demonstrated exceptional athleticism. In a close finish, the Nassau Kings were victorious over the Elwood Knight Riders with a final score of 54-52. “We wanted to bring attention to the general public in the school district all the wonderful contributions that people with disabilities have to offer” said Zenobio. “We strive to build a community that represents the diverse nature of Elwood that’s all inclusive where everyone’s strengths are represented and
